Higher Education Distance Learning for Refugees

Purpose:
Address the lack of opportunities for refugees to access higher education
Help ensure refuges can achieve their educational potential
Objective:
To ensure that refugees can graduate with an accredited university degree, free of charge
Targeted population:
Refugees who have completed schooling but are unable to afford to attend university
Refugees who have begun, but not completed, a degree when they left their country
Challenge addressed:
Only 1% of refugees around the world have access to higher education
Refugees are often only able to complete primary and secondary education, with no option of undertaking a university degree
Program description:
Kirin utilises a combination of
online and offline learning
to provide accessible and cost-effective education
Thus far they have enrolled over 1,500 students on their platform and have partnerships with 22 universities
Students begin by choosing one of four
study tracks
online:
Business & Economics
,
Engineering
,
Computer Science
, and
Social Sciences
After completing their online study over one or two years, students complete another year at a partner university
Partner institutions include
Science Po
in France and Al al-Bayt University and the Hashemite University in Jordan
The online part utilises Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), developed at leading institutions including Harvard University and MIT
Students are given a variety of support, including a
buddy program
and
career services
Modules completed online will count towards a degree awarded by one of Kiron’s partner universities
Students can complete their studies at one of Kiron’s partner institutions as soon as all requirements for enrolment are met, including legal and language requirements
Students have completed the full program in Germany, France, Turkey and Jordan
Impact on targeted population:
This program allows refugees to continue their education and obtain a university degree
Impact on host community:
Host countries benefit from having a more educated refugee population
Members of the host community can join the
buddy program
Conditions required:
Students require access to a computer and the internet to be able to undertake their classes
