UNHCR Annual Consultation (Global Compact)

Every year, the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) organizes a consultation with NGO partners around the world. We were present as in previous years and made intensive advocacy for the inclusion of refugee-managed organizations in the Global Compact.

 

What is the Global Compact?

It is an initiative of the member states of the United Nations to agree on a framework to respond to refugee crises.

We drafted a white paper on the importance of refugee-led organizations, such as those we worked with in Malaysia for a year.

This white paper is our contribution to the Global Compact discussions and our idea is simple: refugee organizations must be recognized in this document as key actors in responding to refugee crises.

During this event, we were particularly able to ask the question of the place of refugee-run organizations in the Global Compact directly to UNHCR’s High Commissioner: « Refugee-based organizations play a key role in the answers and must be recognized as key players and supported. How will this be reflected in the Global Compact? »

 We were also able to make a presentation on good practices of refugee organizations in advocacy at the local level during a session on refugee representation. Finally, we had the opportunity to meet with key UNHCR actors, and we strongly hope that our recommendations will be included in the Global Compact.
