Organization:
Collateral Repair Project
Purpose:
To help refugees who have recently started moved to Amman, Jordan
Objective:
To provide basic necessities to newly arrived refugees
Targeted population:
New urban refugees who do not have sufficient money to buy basic necessities
Challenge addressed:
Emergency support and basic aid provided to urban refugees
Help ease immediate challenges including food insecurity and malnutrition
Program description:
As of December 2016, Jordan
hosts over 650,000 refugees
, the majority of whom come from Iraq and Syria
According to the Collateral Repair Project, many refugees in Amman may have money to rent somewhere to live, but
do not have enough to afford basic necessities
This includes food, bedding, and household supplies
This is important as it is, “
not uncommon for families to sleep on hard concrete floors with no bedding, no way to cook their food and no utensils to eat it with
“
The Emergency Assistance Program includes a focus on ensuring food security
The Food Voucher Program provides regular payments to urban refugees and allows them to choose what to purchase at the local market each month
This contrasts with other program’s that give one-time provisions of rice or lentils
According to UNHCR’s
Policy on Cash-Based Interventions
, such approaches provide displaced people with “
greater dignity of choice in meeting their needs
“
Impact on targeted population:
Helped to prevent food and other forms of insecurity
Provides urban refugees with greater autonomy and dignity
Impact on host community:
Refugees boost the local economy by spending their food vouchers in local markets
Conditions required:
Available funds to purchase essential items and cover the costs of food vouchers
Markets for refugees to be able to purchase provisions, including vendors who will accept food vouchers
