Provide an opportunity for refugees and members of the Scottish population to meet in an informal setting
Challenge assumptions about refugees and reduce stigma around migration issues

Promote local integration and communication between communities
According to the Scottish Refugee Council the program, “highlights the fact that refugees are ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. In all the everyday things, refugees are just like us. They are our friends, neighbours and colleagues.“

Host population, refugees and asylum-seekers living in Scotland

Challenge addressed:

Misconceptions, stigma and lack of understanding of refugees and migration issues
Lack of opportunities for refugees to meet each other and members of the host community in an informal setting

Program description:

This program seeks to change the conversation over refugee issues, with less focus on statistics and news stories, instead demonstrating that refugees are “real people, just like us“
The Scottish Refugee Council supports small, informal social meetings that include refugees and other people that live in Scotland
These meetings allow for friendly, inviting spaces for sharing stories and meeting new people
According to Khosrow Zanganeh, a refugee from Iran who now lives in Scotland, the program “looks at the positive side of things, at creating a warm space where people can engage and get to know each other better“
Stories from various meetings have been shared on social media under the hashtag #KettlesBoiled
The United Kingdom has committed to accepting 20,000 Syrian refugees under the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement (VPR) Programme
Scotland has accepted more refugees than any other part of the United Kingdom, with 1/3 of all recently resettled refugees currently residing in the country

Provides members of the host community with an opportunity to meet and learn from refugees
An opportunity to socialise with new people
